Winter League: Carraig 1 v Portmarnock (Ladies) – A Review
Last Sunday, March 1st, at 2pm the Carraig 1 Ladies team was in with a chance to get into the quarter finals of the Winter League. Spring was in the air, we thought, until a blizzard hit the area at about 1pm. Snow, sleet, wind and dropping temperatures made it look as if the match might have to be cancelled. Then just around 1.30 the skies cleared, the ice vanished; it was game on from then.
Myra O’Keane and Amelia Considine playing in team 3 were on edge as the points went back and forward from deuce to advantage, but the games were not going their way. Ruth Jamieson and Jill Clinch were playing a solid match as the second team but then disaster struck: Jill injured her back in the first set and they had to forfeit their match.
So, Carraig were one match down with team 2 out and needed the two remaining matches to win. The pressure was teams 1 and 3 to bring home the win. Sarah Jane Delaney and Olivia Heavey on team 1 were fired up to even up the scores in the second set and they had a very good chance of taking that set but it was to no avail as when team 3 lost their match it was all over and Sarah Jane and Olivia didn’t get a chance to finish their match.
It was a disappointing outcome for Carraig but our motto is “Onwards and Upwards” and it wasn’t long before the texts were coming in from players wanting to put their names down for the Summer League.
The good news is that the Carraig Ladies Charity League team beat Glenageary this week, 2-1. Well done ladies!
